The only bad thing about working in Luang Prabang (if there's any) is that i can't get to enjoy any Singapore public holidays. Lukcily National Day falls on Sunday, which was why i was lucky enough to be able to arrange for a lunch get together with P Tui from Chantavinh Resort.

I still feel sad for Richard though (another Singaporean working for Banyan Tree) that he has to fly off to Li Zhou today to setup another resort for his company. We had a pre celebration at the local disco the night before, and he kept going "One Nation! Happy Birthday Singapore! To Singapore!" It's really nice to see a fellow Singaporean when you are working overseas, but we all seldom meet cos of job commitments as well.

Many things happened in the past week. Other than the fact that i was down with food poisoning and that my ass became like a sewage without a proper plug on, the hotel had guests from Singapore! Not just normal guests, but the media as well one rep from a travel agency in Singapore. Yeah.

Even though i had to work all the way till my birthday (from like a month ago from all the preparations), i must say i have enjoyed playing host to this group much more than the previous FAM trip probably because of where they are from. It had been easier to relate to them and it was less stressful for me.

I do hope that Laos had touched them in a way or another and they will recommend this lovely place to their friends and family. :)

I'm back from a concert world tour Bangkok - Singapore - Udon Thani - Viantiane - Luang Prabang! okay i'm just kidding, it's all for work.

Work has been so hectic that i had literally forgotten all about this blog until Eric reminded me of its existence.

In another 48 hours, i would have worked in Laos for 9 years.

That would mean 2 years and 3 months remaining to the end of my contract. Was talking to a secondary school classmate of mine about how i can adapt to life in Singapore after that. It's not like it's any slower in Luang Prabang (if anyone is thinking along that line). Working in a Singapore company is just like working in Singapore, or maybe worse, with my sleep reduced to 4 - 5 hours per day and my left shoulder dislocated from a recent accident. (it's better now during the low season) There are no skyscrappers here, no cinemas, no KFC ( the nearest is over the borders to Thailand)

My recent trip back home was more of a hi-bye with my parents. Nothing more than just a meal together for 2 evenings and 1 lunch out of 5 days 4 nights that i was there as the whole journey was packed with nothing but meetings with weekends occupied as well. Sorry that i couldn't meet all friends out there this time round especially to my friends from IESingapore whom i couldn't join in for their KTV session. I promise i'll make time out the next trip.

The highlight of the trip would have to be Bangkok. I mean seriously man. I was so occupied with appointments i had to meet up with my Chula classmates late in the evenings. So much so that i missed my morning flight back to Singapore. I was too drunk to wake up in time. Luckily SQ was kind enough to change my flight. :p

Getting sick in Luang Prabang is seriously no joke.

I had been down with fever since Wednesday. Fainted in the toilet, lukcily with my pants zipped before i was discovered. Recovered on Saturday, but had a relapse again on Sunday. Luckily my boss' mum brought me to the doctor's.

The place was ulu. damn ulu. imagine a chinese medical hall set for western medical practice in the 70s Singapore. I had a jab in the butt, and slept like a baby all the way till this morning.

lesson learnt. never get sick in Luang Prabang.

Finally had a chance to take a boat back to Muang Kham yesterday

The new village chief's house...

Nothing beats the voices of the kids running past and shouting:" aai vasan klap maa leaw (wasan's back!)" It's been 5 months since the first time i went there, but the villagers still remember me. Some say i've grown thinner, some say my host's wife cried the day she knew i was back in Luang Prabang to work and thought i wasn't going back to visit them even though i was just a river away.

Cement has been sponsored by Indochina Services, but the project has been stalled for weeks due to financial problems.

Sometimes i really wonder what's wrong with these European guests.

Some French guests checked in, and upon seeing that the room is not what they had expected. they kick up a big fuss.

We did not promise you anything. The agents booked the rooms for you. You took their word, too bad.

and when you have no deluxe rooms left, they kick up a bigger fuss, demanding for this and that. i happened to be there last night. apparently my staff gave them the wrong key. I happened to be 'suay' enough to be there, they just threw the key at me. WOW.

'If you don't give us bigger rooms i will kill you' and mind you, she was pulling at my collar.

My staff were there, all speechless.

'I would appreciate it, if you would pass me the key madam, if you respect me, i will respect you too. sorry you can't kill me, i'm protected by Singapore Law. If the rooms aren't up to your standards, you are free to stay in other hotels, but i think being the peak season, you either take my rooms or you have to end up in some $5 guesthouse'

They got their rooms eventually though, but only after i gave a good lashing at the tour leader.

So what if you are using Euros, so what if you are white, so what if you are part of the EU. So what if you have the money.

Screw yourselves. We don't need people like you here in Luang Prabang

There was a power shut down in the whole of Luang Prabang City.

My phone(s) were out of battery and i couldn't charge them at all. But the city is surprisingly small that i don't really need a mobile phone for people to communicate with me. everyone more or less knows each other, the moment i ride pass them they will just shout to me that my staff is looking for me.

I had no problems dealing with having no phone to use, other than not being able to contact my loved ones in Singapore.

Thus i conclude, you don't need a phone to survive in Luang Prabang :)

up on Mt. Phousi about 4 months ago. and now i'm back again...

i was up there to do some shoots with my boss for the hotel promotional materials 2 nights ago. nice view, but one heck of a climb.

many things happened this week, but the most exciting one has to be my virgin motorbike accident. the damn tuk tuk driver jammed his brakes and i practically rammed into him and fell flat with the bike on me. Not much damage except for some cuts and wounds and i wasn't wearing any helmet! the bike was surprisingly alright, zero scratches.

need to up my insured amount soon. haha

yep. and so it is. i met Mr Kong today at Tenah Merah Country Club after his nephew picked me up from YCK MRT station.

Cool place. with nice greens and view of people playing golf not to mention $8 nasi lemak. !! my god. Fengyi was commenting maybe next time inflation will bring the price to greater heights, maybe $80!

Friday's the day to fly, to Laos and then back on Tuesday. for me to get a feel of the job and the office and also to do some networking in the case i'm going for the offer. so fast isn't it.

I'm forced into the workforce with this graduation that i'm unprepared for. I think i'm lucky so far. Even though when i'm still serving my internship, offers are coming in easily. I can't bear to leave IE, can't bear to leave my fun colleagues who have been teaching me the ropes, can't bear to leave my parents, and yet at the bottom of my heart, i already knew what i wanted. It's a struggle.

I know starting out in Laos wouldn't be easy, but i have a gut feel that it's my calling. Everything just happened when Sheryl linked me up with the company. Such is the magic of networking in IE and maybe anywhere else.

Maybe i shouldn't have confessed at all. There's no chance for this budding romance to blossom into something at all since i'm leaving, according to you, sadly. I bet you didn't know the stupid things i did to get close to you, but i'm glad you came by and took me out of the shadows from the previous saga. :)

Acres of Awareness was carried out smoothly, but we didn't hit the target amount. :( nevermind it's a learning process.

And it also made me realise that as one grows older, there are more things to handle, u have your career to worry about, u have A.O.B and stuff. you end up forgetting your birthday too, cos it's something not that significant anymore. I never geh siao k, like what someone said. I really forget about my birthday on the eve of it until Pei Shan Reminded me.

Anyway, kudos to my YEP team mates who came to help and support me through the event though i didn't have time to interact with them cos i was in the bear suit half the time

Job interviews are a pain, especially when it's your first time. Well not exactly, but it's the first bank interview i went for, not that i don't want to apply for other banks but the rest have already stopped accepting applications long before the results came out.

The damn bus is stuffy, slow and crowded.

This is what i've been going through for the past 3 weeks.

Leaving home at 7.30 am and reaching home earliest at 8pm (provided i leave office a 6.30pm)and as late as 10.30pm.

and then u have your parents there, waking u up at random times after 2.45am just to tell you which team has scored.

i think i'm reaching my limit for any more shots of expressos....

Today is Sunday, a normal practice day, but there wasn't a single sound coming out from the practice rooms. No one was tuning their instruments, no one was flipping through the scores. The cafe was fully occupied by members from the orchestra, but it was awfully quiet.

At 12pm, we received news from your family. You were going to be transferred from SGH to the casket centre at 1pm. Everyone rushed there, but we weren't allowed to see you until you were properly made up. The wait was long, it was painful, but we hung on, for everyone wanted to see you for the last time. at 5pm, the undertaker shouted to us, to take our turns in an orderly manner. You laid motionless, with your favourite jacket on. Your lips were purplish, fingers too. Your face resembled that of figurines in the wax museums - cold and stiff. The weepings turned into wailings, and then to shoutings and pounding on your chest, for you to wake up and to see how many of us are here for you.

There wasn't any wake for you. Too fast they say. We have to send you to get reincarnated. Lisa booked a bus for everyone to send you off at the crematorium. There were classmates from TP, NYP, your teachers, as well as your relatives. The chants went on for 15 minutes followed by Jingwen playing your favourite tune on the erhu. We took a look at you one last time before they nailed your coffin. The viewing room seperated us from you. The robotic arms brought your coffin in and sent you into the merciless hot oven. The gates closed. Reality struck finally as i recalled the days where we went out for late night supper and movies, my tears leaked out like a broken tap. Relatives screamed for you to return for dinner, some shouted at you to run from the flames. The rest went hysterical and one of us fainted.

Zhang Xing showed us an article in the papers about you and David - both NYP students and fellow orchestra members who left the world 6 months apart. It didn't take long before the paper was soaked with tears. There's nothing we can do now. You might have seen David by now. Things will never be the same again. The bass section lost a good bassist. Wherever you are now Ruixiang, please take care. You are terribly missed.

It's inevitable to have death cross our paths as we age, but im not prepared to face it so many times.

The first time i receive news of the death of a classmate was 3 years ago. a minor slip of his motorbike caused his head to be crushed underneath the bus.

The first time i attended a friend's wake was 2 years ago. We had just ORDed, he was one of the mechanics in camp. a motorcycle mishap (again) took his life. Ironically he was on his way to another funeral.

Just before Chinese New Year this year, a fellow member from the orchestra got into a freak accident while sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by his poly classmate. There wasn't enough time to rush him to the hospital.

There was Thai music performance today. But i felt uneasy. It felt unusally weird. I suddenly thought of going back to Cheng San CC, to see everyone on Sunday morning, just to make sure i'm not missing out on too much after throwing things aside for my SEP and YEP for the past one year. Then came the news from Jia Jing. Rui Xiang had passed away in an accident.

We crossed our paths in 2003,

striking me as a guy who is so care free,

and then came the performances the whole year round.

To SEP and YEP, away i went.

yeah, i'm going to Laos! i just realised that i'm 3 days away from going back home. The only worry i have is the documentation of the trip. As Victor was telling me yesterday, we only have one chance per shot, miss it and that's it.

I think i'll start packing first, before i start panicking with so many things to buy. I can understand what the excitement is about, but i guess i'm just too used to travelling. Even my parents don't give a d*mn about it.

My first trip to Vietnam on my own, my mum was throwing all kinds of stuff into my bag, and my dad was screaming at me to purchase insurance. For the subsequent trips i didn't even purchase any. I think i was taking quite a huge risk indeed when i was staying abroad for 5 months without any insurance.

My dad was asking me about the trip 2 days ago,

dad: "oh where ah?"
"Laos."

Just heard this song on the online Thai station again. Really brings back memories of my SEP in Thailand. Watched many free movies cos my Thai friend had all these free tickets, out of which this OST has the most lasting impression on me. The only motivation that drives me to go back to Thailand is not just the cheap stuff, clubbing scene, shopping, blah blah blah but also the culture and stuff (friends too!).

I'm glad that not only my mum but my lecturer also supports my decision in concentrating on Thailand and Laos as my niche. Maybe i'll take up Vietnamese soon? Rumours has it that the Vietnam Economy is gonna be overtaking the Thai economy soon, or maybe it has?

I've made a promise to myself that i will take up music lessons, ( i'm sick of playing the same thing with minimal improvisation on the khong wong and my friends have been bugging me to continue my lessons with them) ,maybe do more travelling to more ulu provinces by public bus (my favourite activity when i was on SEP) this time round if i'm successful with IESingapore Thailand... maybe maybe maybe....

Yeah IESingapore called. The call definitely made my day. There's this lady by the name of Roxanne frm HR side who called this morning asking me how much allowance i was expecting, since it's the first time ever that someone has written over to request for internship in their branch office overseas. Only problem now is with Security clearance, cos the office is in the Singapore embassy.

Hopefully things will be settled fast enough so that i can settle down and concentrate on my exams.

YEsterday was the day i looked so ah gua in front of my YEP team mates.

I am grateful though, that Eric wasn't there. If not there would have been an addition to the list of banned personals in Thailand.

The hour before the performance was the most hectic one, with my Thai music lecturer missing in action most of the time, and then throwing the responsibility of arranging everyone to us and some of the other members of the Thai music ensemble. Luckily everyone was coorperative and we managed to modify the dance according to the performance area. Kudos too, to the "sistas" from Chula who helped more than 20 people put on the chongkaben, the thai form of Sarong. I on the other hand managed to pull off the exteremely feminine dance with my dance partner, when we had less than 2 practices together, and less than 30 minutes each time.

As usual, the item together with the Chula musicians was stressful, to the extent my sweat was dripping on my khong wong. Jan jumped to his solo too soon, blah blah, but overall it was one of the best performances the ensemble had

The Chula students are here! Had practice with them last night. Damn it they are seriously good. So stressed that i was sweating during the practice even though the air conditioining was switched on. No joke.

There was this guy 1.5 times my size. He came over, sat himself in the other khong wong. Fitted nicely and snug inside the khong wong. Maybe a bit uncomfortable to the point that he looked immobilised. But when he started playing. WAH LAO. he looked like martin yen on his chopping board with his chopper. so fast. at the point of time i really felt like telling Ajarn Gung i'm not feeling well, wanna go home.

at 1, i peed over my grand uncle while i was riding over his shoulders

at 2, i was already a drunkard in training. downed my dad's guiness stout. ended up in the hospital for 2 nights

at 3, i had my first bicycle with 2 extra side wheels. still fell off cos i was trying to imitate the bike stunts on tv by going down the rocky slope in my kampung. i did a mini super man

at 4, i chased after some chickens in the kampung, fell down and hit against a cracked pot. which explains the scar on my nose.

at 5, i cried after seeing the house and chicken coop being pulled down by the bull dozer. the government was trying to shift the whole kampung to HDB flats

at 6, i got hit by a girl with a water bottle when i refused to lend her money at school. I heard she went on to HCJC. Good guys always finish last...

at 7, drafted into the TAF club (FAT club)

at 8, rank 12th in school. yeah

at 9, transferred to another school, a change to a better environment. So my parents claimed.

at 10, streamed to EM1, everyone was so pia. I realised i'm actually quite stupid and slow.

at 11, i realised my chinese teacher doesn't really like me cos she was picking on me. hitting my palms cos i had the ugliest handwriting in the whole world

at 12, doubted whether it was i or my mum who was studying. She had a collection of exam papers, prelim papers from other gifted primary schools. She knew answers to every question. "standard answers LOH" she would say. kanna arthiritis too, i think it runs in the family. almost had to use a wheelchair to go to school.

at 13, i had a taste of being a bus conductor when i don the RV uniform

at 14, nominated into my CCA com. and had my first taste of politics. scary.

at 15, my first solo on stage. yeah.

at 16, my history teacher tried to make me to drop history for the 'O' levels. Which i refused to, cos i was left with only one science after dropping chemistry. My mum was forced to come to school to meet the principal. I'm not that academic i suppose. grade hungry idiots. i managed to shut her up with an A2.

at 17, i became a stone. donning the grey uniform of NJC. as usual my mum was a regular 'client' at the meet the parents session cos my grades suck.

at 18, donned the stupid green uniform 2 weeks after my A levels. where boys become man they say. “这么胖，我看你是正的进去，横着出来”my dad really said this. Wah.... i lost 20kg. Eat this pa!

at 19, fell in love again... ah...

at 20, i feel myself growing stupid with each day as i continued donning the green uniform

at 21, got dumped again.... my mum actually laughed at me when she saw me crying. 世上只有妈妈好

at 22, my mum thought i was turning gay cos i kept speaking thai

at 23, longest stay overseas away from home for my SEP. i realised my parents grew older after not seeing them for 5 months.

Was at clarke quay for some stupid assignment interview only to find out it's MLM. Still dare to put on the Nineo.com site, and the staff don't even bother to check for authenticity.... Luckily i was dragged to the same company before, saved me the trouble of going back to the same place again.

Well at least not all of time's wasted. Walked around clarke quay in the afternoon before i met that guy. Along the 2 banks in fact cos i had 30 minutes to spare and i haven't been to clarke quay for at least 10 months. The last time i went there was 2 days before i flew to Thailand for SEP, and it was with my colleaguesfrom OCBC.

It's unusually quiet in the day in clarke quay. It's good, cos i managed to take some photos since i was feeling like a tourist

The NUS Chinese Orchestra will be holding it's annual concert on the 22nd March at 8pm

Pieces include

1. 满江红

2. 天山盛会

3. 敢问路在何方 (yes it's that funny journey to the west original sound track during our childhood days where the funny sound effect diu diu diu comes out during the intro)

4. Some singing by soloists.

I was supposed to perform but Eugene came into the picture in time to replace me (yeah?) cos i'm super not free. So now Suyi's asking me to go for the concert. ( i can't say no since i've already pang seh them for the concert) Tickets at $9.80 $13 and $17

Eugene is able to fit into my uniform. Yeahness. Meaning he's going to replace me for the concert. 满江红 is pretty nice though. Pity i can't perform this year. Hopefully i'll be free next year. I've been missing out on alot since last year.

Went to queensway to check the prices for printing

On a lighter note

Erm, no this shop is not for people looking for a bonk. Sells a variety of bag packs though not as many as the other shops. The price is relatively cheaper, maybe by $8 - $10. Located on the first floor, expect to hear Thai folk songs being blasted when you enter.

Finally got to enter the music ensemble room again after a 2 week break.

Nothing beats touching the Khong Wong Yai again, even though it was just for less than 30 minutes. Most of the time was spent on the Angklung for an upcoming performance. I seem to prefer this to my usual dosage of drums and classical stuff. I'm losing touch.

I hope eugene is able to fit into my uniform. So that he can replace me for the concert. Not that i'm escaping from it. I really want to perform. Just that i'm pretty occupied at the time being.

went to Bugis yesterday to check out the stock for Fund raising. Really brings back fond memories of the time when i would wake up in the morning and take a bus for 12 baht to Pratunam to beat the crowds of aunties who would gather at the wholesale centre to get their stock.

Over at Pratunam, the shops are squeezed up together in an alley and the common corridor is so small that it can only fit in 1 person walking in one direction at any time, come to think of it, it's pretty dangerous if there was a fire.

Everything was familiar, one of the shopkeepers other than Terence even recognised me since we are always in the same area in Bangkok. Seeing the tops were just like seeing my old friends. If you ask me what's the most memorable time i had when i was selling clothes from Thailand, it must be the time spent arranging the tops and checking the colours and also carrying bags of tops and walking for at least a km to the bus stop to go home at least 3 times a week.

Irene called later in the evening to ask me to help her book a room at the apartment i stayed in during my SEP. surprisingly the lady actually remembers my voice ( i've forgotten hers already, i think it's lei or something. oops.)

receptionist in thai:"when are you coming back, how come you are not coming with your friend?"

me: "soon la, I have no money to spend so i am not going back so soon. haha. how's everyone?"

receptionist: "doing fine, the auntie (landlady) and your favourite waitress misses you badly ( she's ladyboy who likes to make fun of me whenever she sees me , and she's not exactly my favourite waitress...) . "

me:speechless....

receptionist: "auntie is here and wants to talk to you but she thinks the IDD call very expensive so leave it till your next trip back, anyway we will leave the same room you had for you, just let us know 1 month in advance before you come. anyway you left one shirt and underwear here on the last day... hahaha..."

me:speechless... (oh my...) i should think twice about going back this coming holidays...

Was looking through some of the videos i took at random and chanced upon this. It was the last academic week in Chula b4 the exams and Alby and i were late for school. Not really. But we woke up late. Had a test that day and it was supposed to start at 8am, he woke me up at 7.30. Miracoulously we were both ready by 7.40am

As you can see, we were both quite excited as it was the first time we were late. haha. Not "we" exactly. But maybe the first time for alby cos he's always the one waking me up for lessons (i realised the alarm doesn't work for me no matter how loud it is). So technically it's the first time Alby screwed up.

With 15 or so minutes left, we rushed to the nearest bunch of motorcycles and paid them 70 baht each (heck with the bargaining, $3.60 for 20% of your exam results was worth it). I think we're the only students to come to school on motorcycle. (pretty in style)

But poor Kanji didn't make it on time. He happily thought it was at 9am. While the rest of us were wrecking our brains in that computer lab, he was still in dream land with Ayumi Hamasaki and Boa. I think he still passed in the end la although he missed the 20% totally...

In that same week itself, i had this freakin presentation that neither of my group members had prepared for. We pulled it off. Heng ah. Took some videos, and i really have to hand it to Kanji. He's always full of nonsense. Check out the middle section of the video below.
